about

Clocking a little under 30 minutes, the 7-track album ‘It’s to Pierce the Sky’ is an ode to the urban, and Medddler’s third album that follows the 2021 release ‘Upsurge’.

Based on the themes residing within a metropolitan city, the songs in the album proclaim the dreams and ambitions of those that roam the streets towered by large concrete structures, looking up at small pieces of sky that shyly greet them on rare occasions.

It’s to Pierce the Sky takes the Japanese concept of Komorebi, which is the word for the dappled light created between the canopy and the branches that allow sunlight to gently filter through; but in the world within the album, it’s the patches of sky bleeding through the skyscraper tops.

Emotionally, It’s to Pierce the Sky is about hope and the absence of it in a systemic sense. The higher up you are in these buildings, the more you see the optimistic clouds and scenic sunsets, while the cobblestoned streets are riddled with chaos, disorder, and forlorn figures in drunk taxis.

It’s to Pierce the Sky retains the idea of meditative escapism from Medddler’s past two releases Upsurge (2021) and Jump Alaska (2020) but elevates it a notch, by painting a bleak, cold and desolate universe that’s reminiscent of the urban experience. While the previous two releases saw their worlds saved by rays of hope, the world-building in It’s to Pierce the Sky is a tad bit different, mixed with realism and resonant with life.
